Preparing your child for an assessment
Psychological assessments can be valuable tools in understanding your child's strengths, challenges, and overall well-being. If your child is scheduled for an evaluation, it's natural to want to prepare them for the process. Here are some tips to help your child feel more at ease and ready for their assessment:

Before the Assessment:
1. Explain the Purpose:
Discuss the assessment in an age-appropriate manner, emphasising that it's not a test of intelligence but a way to understand their feelings, thoughts, and behaviours better.
2. Answer Questions:
Encourage your child to ask questions about what the assessment involves. Address their concerns with honesty and reassurance.
3. Familiarise with the Setting:
If possible, you can have an additional session with Jodie before the assessment begins to help your child feel more comfortable with the environment.
During the Assessment:
1. Stay Supportive:
Accompany your child if appropriate and provide comfort and support throughout the process.
2. Encourage Persistance:
Remind your child that it's okay to be honest and that the assessment is designed to help them. Encourage your child to just give it a go and for them to do their best even if they do not know the answers!
After the Assessment:
1. Debrief and Acknowledge Effort:
Discuss the assessment experience, focusing on their effort and bravery. Acknowledge any concerns they may have and address them together.
2. Reinforce Positivity:
Highlight positive aspects of their experience and emphasise that they've done their best.
3. Follow-up Support:
Be open to discussing any lingering questions or feelings post-assessment and reassure your child that you're available to talk whenever they need.
Additional Tips:
Routine and Rest: Maintain a regular routine before the assessment and ensure your child gets enough rest the night before.
Healthy Habits: Encourage healthy eating and exercise, as physical well-being can impact mental preparedness.
Stay Positive: Your attitude about the assessment can significantly influence your child's perception. Maintain a positive outlook.

Remember, a psychological assessment is a helpful tool designed to understand and support your child better. By preparing them emotionally and mentally, you're empowering them to navigate this experience with confidence. Your support and understanding play a crucial role in helping your child feel more at ease during this process.
